The Vineyards
Eastern Washington Grapes Our high mountain location in the maritime climate of Western Washington makes optimum ripening of red grapes nearly impossible and even the white varieties can be difficult. Like many of Washington wineries we import our grapes from the premium growing locations in Washington’s desert-like climates on the eastern side of the state. Columbia Valley Most of our red grapes come from the Columbia Valley and one of Sagemoor’s three vineyards in the Tri-cities area along the Columbia River. The hot summer days and cool evenings produce superior quality grapes with acid, sugar and pH in perfect balance.
Sagemoor’s Vineyards - Bacchus, Dionysus, and Sagemoor Vineyards Founded in 1968, Sagemoor Vineyards was a pioneering effort that helped establish the Washington State wine industry. It’s early vineyards are among the oldest large-scale plantings of vinifera grapes in the State. With more than 800 acres in production, Sagemoor’s vineyards supply premium quality fruit to many of Washington’s most prominent small wineries. Sagemoor, Bacchus, & Dionysus are located near Pasco on the southwest facing hillsides on the banks of the Columbia River. Sagemoor’s three vineyards are a warm site, although the climate is tempered in winter and summer by it’s proximity to the river. Because of that influence the location is often spared from winter frost damage. Location is extremely important in growing high quality grapes and these vineyards are situated on some of the finest sites in the State. The Terroir The soil consists of sandy loam with some clay and calcareous sub-strata. The vines are trained to bi-lateral cordon and are pre-phylloxera on their own roots. Precision farming techniques such as vigor mapping, regulated deficit irrigation, soil profiling, micro nutrient analysis and "green harvest" thinning are applied to manage yields, balance canopy with crop load, and optimize sun exposure that ensure consistent high quality fruit. Grape Characteristics The grapes in general are well structured with ample backbone and exhibit some of the earthiness of the Graves region of Bordeaux, with herbal, plum, and cherry aromas. Vineyard Control We have acreage contracts for many of our grapes. That gives us consistent rows within the blocks that we harvest from every year and it gives us the ability to actively participate in viticultural decision-making. We control how they are grown and when they are harvested within our preferred blocks in pursuit of our personal flavor profile goals. s
